Find out more below about some of Sri Lanka’s most infamous cities and regions:
Colombo: Sri Lanka’s capital city has it all – shops, temples, parks, tourist attractions, markets, food – you name it, Colombo has it. Stroll around the busy city’s streets and old neighbourhoods, or take a tour in one of Asia’s iconic tuk-tuks.
Sigiriya: The ancient wonder that is Sigiriya Fortress stands atop a 359m rock. Climb the Lion Rock’s 1200 steps to experience arguably the most incredible views in Sri Lanka, overlooking endless miles of forestry. The fortress ruins are accompanied by ancient engravings, and it’s no surprise that this is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular attractions.
Kandy: Sri Lanka’s second city, Kandy, is a place of blissful chaos and endless things to do. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth for a dose of history and culture, and explore the picturesque Royal Botanic Gardens of Peradeniya – look out for monkeys along the way! Top tip: find a spot high above sea level to watch the sunset over Kandy’s pastel rooftops.
Galle: Galle’s focal point is its historically-rich walled Fort, with immaculate architecture influenced by the Dutch, Portuguese and British. Galle Fort’s stylishness will have you roaming the streets for hours, and its location will have you gazing out into the Indian Ocean in three different directions.
Jaffna: The city of Jaffna lies in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province, and boasts its own Fort, bustling markets, spectacular religious structures and fascinating museums. Jaffna promises to give you not just a holiday, but an authentic Sri Lankan experience.
Hikkaduwa: Dive in at Hikkaduwa’s coast, with snorkelling, surfing and glass-bottom boat rides. The beaches in this area are perfect for relaxing, and the compact town is the place to search for some tailor-made souvenir apparel. Hikkaduwa also offers plenty of opportunities for fine dining on the sand, alongside some cosy beach bars to enjoy your evenings at.
Udewalawe: Home of Udawalawe National Park, the best thing to do in Udewalawe is hop into a Jeep for a real safari experience. Spy wild elephants, crocodiles and everything in between as they lounge about their natural habitats. While you’re here, why not check out Udewalawe’s impressive reservoir, too.
Ella: One of Sri Lanka’s many quaint inland towns, Ella is surrounded by natural beauty. Keep an eye out for those iconic blue trains as you walk along the tracks towards the hills. If you’re looking for a hiking trip, climb Mini Adam’s Peak and Ella Rock for amazing views (and a thrilling sense of achievement!). In the evenings, stroll through town to find a wealth of lovely restaurants and bars.
